What a privilege and honor it is to be an Antietam Battlefield Guide. It seems I have been working towards this goal all of my life. To walk in the footsteps of those brave Americans, share their stories, and interpret battlefield tactics and strategies brings me unbelievable satisfaction.
As a Seasonal Interpretative Park Ranger for the past nine years, I have given tours and presentations to thousands of visitors at Antietam National Battlefield. These visitors have included school groups, military units, congressmen, foreign diplomats, and high ranking government officials, as well countless individual families who have an interest in American history.
For thirty-two years, I was a high school counselor and history teacher in West Virginia and Maryland. In addition, I was honored to serve as a United States Army Reserve Military Intelligence Officer for twenty-eight years. I reside in Martinsburg, West Virginia with my wife Rebecca and spend much of my free time playing with my three grandchildren.
I have been a presenter for the Chambersburg Civil War Seminars and the Catoctin Regional Studies Center as well as other Civil War interest groups. I have had several articles published in Civil War journals and newsletters.
It has been very gratifying to me that many visitors share my interest in understanding the impact of the Battle of Antietam. The Americans that were in Sharpsburg that fateful day included not only soldiers but families whose lives were forever changed. As you hear about their experiences, your faith in the triumph of the human spirit will be enriched.
I invite you to join me as we step back into time. Walk with me over the Burnsides Bridge, in the Sunken Road, and through Miller’s Cornfield as we remember the bloodiest single day in American history.
I will be honored to share the Antietam experience with you and predict that your visit will become a special memory.
